Team Challenges

In Incredible Room I we have been completing team challenges.
These activities are desgined to challenge the childrens thinking, allow the children to work together to solve problems.
We have been completing some challenging, but fun tasks.

One of these challenges was the Tower Challenge.

In groups of 5 the children had to make a tower ONLY out of:

-Newspaper
-a strip of long masking tape

They had 30 minutes to create the 1 metre tower.
It had to support a tennis ball, and stand upright.

Here are some photos of our tower challenge.

SWIMMING

Swimming this term is focusing on the Sealord swimming to survive programme and this will take place EVERY WEEK.

Room I have swimming times:

Wednesday 10.30-11am
and
Friday 9-9.30am

Due to Friday being so early, please ensure children arrive at school early, about 8.30am. This will ensure the children time so they can get changed, and have gear ready to go down to the pool, as soon as the bell ,at 8.50am, rings.

Thank you :)

Miss Kyle

Camp

Camp is not far away...

We leave NEXT Wednesday the 2nd of Novemeber...

Just a reminder to parents and children to organise THIS WEEK the gear you will need to have to be ready for camp...

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome back to term 4 2011!

Room I is in for a busy, but fun filled term.
We have short 8 weeks, and one of these weeks is camp, how exciting.

REMEMBER to keep on the alert for notices coming home about last minute camp details or reminders.

The homework in Incredible I will be the same expectations as term 1, 2 and 3 with the children having to complete, each week:

-Task sheet
-Basic facts sheet
-Timestables
-Reading (4 nights a week, at least 20 minutes)

The children are in the run for a little surprise if they complete homework every week, for the entire term.

I am looking forward to having a positive term 4 with the children. I welcome any parent or child to come and see me to ask questions, find out details (and hopefully I can help you out). It is hard when the term is so busy to remember everything, so if you have an issue, or question please feel free to come on in and see me, or just call.

Thanks,

Miss Kyle

ENVIRO DAY

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Room I is celebrating Manchester Street School Enviro Action Day, for Term 3, on Monday the 5th of September.

The theme for Enviro Action Day this term is Apples.
As you all know the children had the opportunity to order an apple tree of their choice, by giving a gold coin donation, earlier this term. The children will receive these trees on Enviro Day and all the class activities will be focused on apples.

One of the activities will be peeling, cutting and stewing apples. To do this I would love if every child could bring the following items:

-1 peeler
-A topping of their choice to go with the stewed apples.
Some ideas for toppings could be: sultanas, raisins, yogurt, cream, ice-cream etc.

Every child will receive an apple on Enviro Day, which we will use for the stewing (so no apples are needed).

I would really appreciate if ANY parents/caregivers could bring in a slow cooker for Incredible I to use, to stew our apples in, as I only have one at the moment, and will need more than one to cook 30 apples. These can be dropped to me anytime before Monday, or even Monday morning.

It would be wonderful if ANY parent/caregiver could pop in to help sometime during the morning. I need help with gardening and having some parents working with small groups to peel and slice apples, using peelers and knives. Please get back to me by Friday afternoon if you are able to support me on the Monday.

Thank you,

Miss Alicia Kyle.

Rugby Fun!

Incredible Room I had the BEST time visiting The Rugby Museum, in Palmerston North, Te Manawa.

We had a chance to look around at all of the old jerseys and the awards the All Blacks and other great teams have won over the years. I know we all learnt so much from the tour we were given, and I think Parents and teachers were more interested in asking questions to the guide than the children :).

Did you know: The first rugby ball was made out of a pigs bladder (blown up). They had to be extremely careful with the ball, as it could easily pop (that is why they put a rubber/leather case over it). It is also another reason for why the rugby ball is not a circle. The pigs bladder was not a perfect circle, and harder to catch, which is why the rugby ball has the unusal shape.

Did you know: The first ever New Zealand Rugby jersey was blue, made off wool ,and had a gold fern hand sewn onto it (all of the jerseys were not the same blue either they had to bring their own).

We also had the chance to have a go on some equipment they had in the museum. We had a go at sprinting, kicking, tackling, scrumming and jumping in a line out. It was so much fun for the children AND PARENTS!

Room I had a great day and learnt so much :)

Room I and Room D's buddy assembly!

Room I and D's buddy assembly was a success! As many of the parents were able to see.

It was alot of fun and a great time for the two classes to show off the art they had completed, and the song they had learnt together (everyone enjoyed the animals!).

For those families that could not make the assembly- here is the photostory that was displayed in the assembly of Room I and Room D's experiences throughout the year. Some are buddy activities, others are own class experiences.

Enjoy...

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great break for two whole AMAZING weeks! (I know I did!)

I am looking forward to a busy, but productive term with a focus on the Rugby World Cup and focusing on speeches with theme of "the Greatest Gift".

I just wanted to remind children and parents about the homework expectations for the term.
The children are to complete:
-a homework task sheet (set every week)
- spelling
-maths sheet
-practise their multiplication tables

Remember Incredible I- If you complete your homework throughout the whole term (every week) you are able to choose/select a delicious treat for myself, Miss K, to bake. (Man those chocolate cupcakes I made last term were amazing!)

Parents if you have any questions or problems PLEASE come and see me whenever :). I love talking with you about the childrens successes or areas they need to work on.

Thanks so much,

Miss K

Inquiry Mighty Machines project...

Over the next two weeks your children may be coming home asking you to help them find some materials or resources they can use to help create and make their machines they have designed in the class. This is a team effort, and your child is not alone. The children may need things like string, cardboard, pulleys, wood, containers etc. They have chosen what to use and are expected to be in charge of bringing the materials in. There will be a final display day where their machine will be on display for all of M.S.S to come and see and you are welcome to come along also.
A presentation is also expected, by the group, using a display board, which they are to create. It has been alot of fun for the children and I have observed some great problem solving skills being used in the classroom.

Please encourage and support your child with this and if you have any questions at all please do not be afraid to come in and ask me :).

Speed Stackers!

In Incredible I we have been lucky to have been given a set of speed stackers for our class to have and use over the year.
Here is an AMAZING video that gives you a preview of what it is all about.
Room I is working on getting as fast as we can!

Mighty Machines unit!

In INCREDIBLE I we have been looking into some simple machines that we use in everyday life to make things easier for us to do.
There are 6 types of simple machines:

- Levers

-Pulleys

-Gears

-Inclined Plane

-Wedge

-The Wheel and Axle

We have been watching YouTube clips on these topics and they have been very interesting to watch.
I thought it would be a good idea to share with parents and others the great and informative sites we have accessed, so they can understand a little bit of what learning has been occurring in Incredible I.

Making Pikletes!

In Incredible Room I we have been studying explanation writing.
Today, the 17th of May, we were able to make pikletes by following a recipe and paying close attention to the steps involved.

First we had to get one cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and sift it into the bowl.

Then we needed to combine 1/4 cup of sugar and an egg.

We then mixed the mixture until the egg and sugar where mixed in with the rest of the ingredients.
We then added 3/4 of milk.

We had to make sure it was well mixed.

We then heated up our frying pan, turning it on at the wall. We had to make sure the temperature was not too high otherwise our pikletes would have burnt.

We then put butter on the pan, to ensure the pikletes didnt stick.

We added the mixture. Putting small spoonfuls onto the pan.

When the mixture was bubbling, it was time to flip.

TA DA! time to eat our delicious pikletes :).

We had alot of fun managed to finish all of them, no surprises there!

Tomorrow we will write an explanation of how to create a batch of pikletes and inform the reader why they need to follow the instructions and clearly write it out so someone can create a delicious batch themselves :).

We had so much fun as a class and were learning at the same time! Good on you Incredible Room I!
